Hügelkultur

Hügelkultur is a permaculture system employing raised beds constructed from decaying wood debris and biomass plant materials covered with soil. The composting core holds water & provides nutrients for the garden above. Hügelkultur is a German word meaning hill culture & has been practiced in German societies for hundreds of years. The mounded beds are ideal for areas where the underlying soil is of poor quality & rainfall sparse. They are easier to maintain due to their relative height & form a light-duty swale.
